The State Theatre opened its doors on December 12, 1912 as the Lyric Theatre. Built by George W Unger (who owned knitting mill in town) and associates and designs in art decor style by re-owned Philadelphia architect David Supowitz, the theater quickly became an anchor in the community as it showed silent movies, orchestra recitals, public meetings, local talent shows, plays, and graduation ceremonies. In the 1930’s as sound was added to movies, the theatre changed its name to “The State”. The marquee out front was added, and the murals inside the theatre were painted by E. Greco Co. of Philadelphia. In 2016 The State Theatre reopened its doors with a brand - new digital screen and sound under the guidance of the state Theatre Preservation Society, a group of community members dedicated to preserving this wonderful theatre and making it an anchor in the community yet again.
