October 9th at 9:00 AM at 1051 Walt Road, Pennsburg, PA Pennsburg, PA – The Perkiomen Watershed Conservancy invites the public to a special dedication event for the Floating Classroom Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Program on October 9th at 9:00 AM, located at 1051 Walt Road, Pennsburg, PA. This innovative program addresses key DEIJA (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Justice, and Access) issues by providing all 600 Norristown Area School District 5th-Grade Students with opportunities to participate in environmentally-based STEM programs through the Conservancy’s unique Floating Classroom. The Floating Classroom is a groundbreaking initiative that merges outdoor recreation with hands-on environmental investigation. Students from the Norristown Area School District will embark on a scientific adventure using kayaks and Dragonfly I, the Conservancy’s 24-foot solar-powered research vessel. After learning basic paddling techniques, students will explore Green Lane Reservoir to study various aspects of the environment. Each exploration culminates with students linking up with the Floating Classroom research boat, a reimagined pontoon boat outfitted with WiFi, iPads, microscopes, water testing kits, and more. Using this high-tech equipment, students will analyze their collected data and present their findings to their peers—creating the perfect blend of science and recreation. "This program is about more than just environmental education; it’s about creating accessible learning experiences for all students, particularly those who might not otherwise have these opportunities," said Ryan Beltz, Executive Director of the Perkiomen Watershed Conservancy. "We’re thrilled to host this program and excited to see the impact it will have on the next generation of environmental stewards." Initial funding for the program has been secured from the PA Fish and Boat Commission, Aqua Pennsylvania and American Water. However, to ensure the continuation of this program, the Conservancy is seeking additional funding to ensure that future students can experience the magic of the Floating Classroom. The dedication event will feature remarks from Conservancy leadership, local officials, and partners who have supported this initiative. Attendees will also have the opportunity to view the Floating Classroom and witness firsthand the tools and techniques students will use to explore the wonders of Green Lane Reservoir. Join us on October 9th at 9:00 AM to celebrate the launch of this incredible program and witness how the Floating Classroom is shaping the future of environmental education.
